Thursday – Mar 9 Left
Austin this morning. It has been rainy
or cloudy all week and we just couldn’t face another rained out cowboy
shoot. Lake Charles, LA was predicting
rain for the weekend. We could head east
and show up for the two day match, but we are kinda missing home. So we calculated the cost of fuel vs our
already paid fees and decided to head north.
With my cold and all, I really wasn’t up to a shoot in the rain or
really, anything but stellar weather. So
we revamped our plan, slightly, hoping for sunnier weather.
We drove to Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park, TX. This is the spot where Texas declared its
independence from Mexico. “Although
Mexico’s war of independence pushed out Spain in 1821, Texas did not remain a
Mexican possession for long. It became its own country, call the Republic of
Texas, from 1836 until it agreed to join the United States in 1845.” The warm weather has brought out the bugs. Lots
of flies. The river is good sized so that a ferry operated nearby back in the
day. The town thought river traffic
would never end and didn’t worry when the railroad went in miles away. Now the state park is all that is left of the
town.
We drove to Martin Creek Lake State Park, TX to spend the
night. The info in the state park book
said that a nearby power plant keeps the lake warm. OMG!
The coal fired plant takes up ¾ of the lake. It lights up the whole southern sky. It
released steam to such an extent I thought a fleet of airplanes was flying
right overhead. We are stuck here and
none of the other campers are disturbed by the noise. Jim said…Cindy you aren’t in Idaho anymore. This isn’t a real campground. This isn’t real
wilderness. This is wrong on so many levels.
As I worked on my blog, little beetle-like bugs came crawling in when we
cracked the window. The south can keep
its weather and bugs and mugginess.
