Feb 17 – We headed south from the Apache Casino and drove to Safford, AZ. Pretty deserty country until Swafford which is mostly farmland. Lots of cotton fields. South of Safford is Roper Lake State Park. We stopped to hike around the lake and found this is a migratory lake with hundreds of birds and birders. On our way back to the truck we saw a Pig? Peccary? Something… This is also a swimming and fishing lake which provided an interesting outdoor shower to get the sand off. Ginny will not cooperate in getting her picture taken:
We got into the Tombstone area around noon. We found a RV campground nearly in between the shooting range and downtown. Nice park with trees, showers, pool, rec room, etc. We got the last spot in the park, but it was dry camping. We found out that we were here during Vigilante Days which is over Presidents Day weekend. So there are events all weekend and into Monday and people. Lots of people.
We drove to check out the range and they fear rain tomorrow, but expect around 100 shooters. Nice range. Six stages.
We drove into Tombstone and walked around downtown for a couple of hours. Old buildings well marked with history. The OK Corral location is the same but has a high wall built around it. This is so you get to pay an admittance fee to watch a reenactment of the gunfight. The saloon was intact as was Wyatt Earp’s house.
Reenactors luring the crowd into the OK corral.
Then we went to the Boothill cemetery. The cemetery had been cleaned up and markers remade, if necessary. There were several graves where two or more people were buried together. Here is a famous grouping.
Interesting…. And it was warm out. 65 degrees!
